Common Refrigeration Misconception

Common Refrigeration Misconception

One of the most common misconceptions in refrigeration is that it is ok to top up your refrigerant levels in your fridge or freezer. Quite the opposite, it is not ok!

This shows you have a problem with your unit, let us at Perth Commercial Fridges and Equipment explain why.

In a fridge or freezer, you have a charge of refrigerant gas. This makes your fridge or freezer cool down, if that level is getting low your fridge isn’t going to be a fridge, it is a box with a glass or solid door on it.

When your refrigeration level gets low it means you have a gas leak in there.  The refrigeration system is closed so gas cannot go anywhere. If a refrigeration mechanic says you need a ‘top up with gas’ it actually means you have a leak in your gas system – either in a gas line, your evaporator, condenser, somewhere there is a leak causing your refrigerant level to drop.

If your refrigeration mechanic says you just need a gas top up it means they are quite happy to come back every 3 to 4 months, take your money and keep topping up with gas.

What they should be doing is explaining you have a low level of refrigerant due to a leak which needs to be found and fixed.

If your refrigeration mechanic says you need a gas top up, please ask them to take a further look and find the leak.
